How to: weaving with Christabel Balfour

A lot of my designs are very simple and
geometric they are actually quite minimal whereas when I started out they were more complicated Over time, they have become, just kind of simplifying and simplifying what my core ideas are and I’m just really interested
in how eloquent really simple shapes can be like you don’t have to do a lot to say a
lot and I think that weaving is such an intuitive craft that you can pick up fairly easily The thing that’s the difference between being an average weaver and being a great weaver is just practice, like everything else Weaving is a really forgiving craft If you make a mistake, you can just unpick it, go back to the beginning and start again It’s not like painting, or, you know, wood carving, where once you’ve taken something away, you can’t put it back Um, weaving, you can always kind of go back and fix things I’ve learnt a lot from older weavers, who have been working on their crafts for years, if someone wants to get into it themselves, I think, obviously, looking at other people’s work, and then, just practicing A lot of what I learnt was from books and the Internet, and from making my own mistakes
